Martha Harlam is Nominated for Prestigious International Hospice Award
The International Award for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC - Vittorio Ventafridda) is one of the most prestigious awards you can attain in regard to furthering the cause of Hospice Care. Ever since Martha Harlam has taken up the cause of bringing Hospice services to the South Costa Blanca, her work, accomplishments and above all her determination to produce Hospice Services has been remarkable.  Her quest to bring about awareness about Hospice care started in March 2004. After a rocky start her registration of the Sweet Charity Hospice Fund was finally legalised and since March 2005 there has no stopping her. Originally taken with the UK system of Hospice care, Martha was initially set on having a hospice built on the Costa Blanca, but once she realised that they needed to care now instead of build she has successfully begun setting up palliative care services with her international care team called the Angel Network. Hospice care is not ingrained in the Spanish way of life. Tradition has shown us that the Spanish nationals prefer to care for their loved ones at home. Martha has had to determine just how she could collaborate with the existing Health Care system in Spain and she has managed to convince Nursing Homes and Hospitals to make Hospice care a part of the everyday Spanish health care system. Now the international committee in Houston Texas are evaluating Martha’s CV and her accomplishments. Letters of recommendation are pouring into the office of the IAHPC selection committee. In response to the nomination Martha said, “I don’t expect to win because many others have more experience and longevity in their work. But it is very encouraging to have been nominated. I am overwhelmed and humbled by the nomination.” Martha Harlam is perhaps one of the youngest candidates ever nominated for the award. A grant of $2000 comes with the winning selection. How wonderful it would be for the cause of Hospice Care on the Costa Blanca if she should win, but in any event everyone is a winner because Martha has been working on our behalf.
