  Palm workshop
The palm grove of Elche was recently declared a National Heritage site. This palm grove is not only a tourist attraction but is also part of the city’s economy and forms part of a very important tradition. Every year, the palms of the tree are covered with a black plastic bag. The reason for doing this is to make the palm leaves white. The white palms of Elche have become famous the world over as on Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos) there is a huge procession where everyone carries a white palm. This white palm is decorated and formed into very creative designs and some families in Elche work all year to make the most beautiful palm design. The origin for this tradition comes from the Bible, when Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem and was cheered and welcomed with olive branches and palms.

  ´Magic pencil´exhibition in Elche

  Torrevieja- another look
“Our town of Torrevieja is characterised by the richness and diversity of its society, in which a wide variety of different nationalities and cultures live together in harmony. This cosmopolitan society has led to a culture and social enrichment of the lives of all who live in our town.” The words of Mayor Hernandéz Mateo in his address in the book ‘Torrevieja Another Look.’ It was this ‘richness’ and ‘diversity’ that inspired the entrants of the short story competition ‘Another Look,’ to write about the town and encompassed what the competition was about.
