The population of the Llanes district is about 13,000 inhabitants, around 4,500 of whom live in the town of Llanes itself. The rest of the population lives in dozens of small villages and hamlets dotted along the coast and inland towards the Sierra del Cuera mountain range.
The medieval centre dates back to the XIII century when the town walls and tower were constructed. In the picturesque port are the ‘Cubes of Memory’ a creation of the Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola. The area also contains some magnificent Indiana mansions.
